Trauma and TMS

Trauma and TMS

Trauma is a response to an incredibly stressful situation. What one person considers trauma may not hold true for another, but at Fair Way Counseling, serving Benton, AR, and the nearby region, any client who feels trauma has taken a toll on their lives is welcome. Through transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and possibly other treatments, Katherine Woodworth, a licensed mental health therapist, and Richard Woodworth, our TMS coordinator, will not only help you overcome trauma but will also help you thrive and achieve a higher level of mental well-being.

Trauma Explained

For some people, trauma may be caused by one event you can't seem to come to terms with, while for others, it may happen from repeat exposure or a long-term event.

Some examples of traumatic events include:

  • Sexual abuse
  • Fighting in a war
  • Physical assault
  • Living through a natural disaster
  • Domestic abuse
  • Being a child and living with abuse or neglect

These are merely some examples, and Katherine would like you to know if you feel you've suffered through trauma not listed, please don't hesitate to reach out for an appointment. Your trauma is still real, even if it's not listed above.

Receiving TMS

This particular treatment uses magnetic fields that stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Ultimately, this can help with trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and anxiety.

Whenever you receive TMS, Richard will place an electromagnetic coil on your scalp that will transmit magnetic energy through the skull. It will reach the nerve cells, which can affect nerve activity in the areas of your brain responsible for depression and mood regulation. Ultimately, this treatment impacts how the brain works by reigniting dormant synapses and restoring normal function, though researchers don't fully understand the exact mechanism of action behind it.

Other Treatments

In addition to TMS, you may also receive talk therapy with Katherine in our Benton, AR, office. During this treatment, the goal is to understand your trauma triggers. We want you to be able to change your thought processes or alter how your brain has processed memories so you don’t have to avoid things or feel hypervigilant.

Treatment may include addressing multiple instances of trauma that have gotten you to the point where you are today.

Katherine and Richard of Fair Way Counseling, serving Benton, AR, and the nearby region, can help you if you've gone through trauma or even have a clinical diagnosis of PTSD. Treatment may consist of TMS and talk therapy to target the mental health issue from multiple angles.
